Dungeons & Dragons cast played a unique campaign for new movie

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves is a new film based on the ever-popular role-playing game.

Starring Chris Pine, Regé-Jean Page, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis, the film sees a thief and some unlikely adventurers band together to undertake a heist to retrieve a lost relic. But things soon go dangerously awry when the group encounter the wrong people.

So, how did the actors prepare for their roles? Well, they played D&D, of course!

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Smith, Lillis and Page revealed that the cast undertook their own campaign as part of a unique rehearsal process.

"We did a campaign that was based on the events after the film, so we got to improvise our character in a different circumstance," Smith said.

"Which you don't really get to do often as an actor. But I think it was integral to the performances in the film, because we got to fully flesh out who these people were."

"I think it was just a fun type of rehearsal," Lillis added. "It was very different. But, I mean, that's basically what it was. We got to know each other, and we got to be these characters together. That was, in our own way, just a way to, you know, flesh out the characters."

Smith continued: "We all just yelled over each other the entire time when we were playing that game, which apparently is how it's normally played."

For Page, the idea not only made sense but was also a lot of fun.

"I'm big into roleplaying games in general," the Bridgerton star said. "But the cool thing is that actors generally are [roleplayers]. Because what we do is, we roleplay. That's the whole job.

"So starting out and playing a game together before we even stepped on set [...] that's one of the most fun ways I’ve ever met my character."

He continued: "I stepped into my character for the first time at a table, playing make-believe with Michelle Rodriguez and Chris Pine and Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis.

"And in terms of the imagination at your disposal at that table, I've never been in a more wild or raucous or thoroughly chaotic game in my life."

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves premieres in cinemas on Friday, March 31.
