No rate cuts? How to navigate inflation and market uncertainty
What do market whipsaws, Fed uncertainty, and tariffs have in common? They’re the focus of the latest Trader Talk episode, with host Kenny Polcari and guest John Lonski tackling the biggest economic questions of 2025. From inflation risks to consumer resilience, Polcari cuts through the noise to help investors stay ahead. In this episode, Polcari welcomes John Lonski, a seasoned economist and former chief economist at Moody’s, to break down shifting market sentiment. The two dive into the debate over Federal Reserve policy, with Polcari firmly in the camp that rate cuts are unlikely this year. Lonski agrees that inflation is creeping back, warning that continued GDP growth could push interest rates higher rather than lower. “We’re starting at full employment,” he explains. “If economic momentum holds, the Fed may have no choice but to keep rates steady—or even raise them.” As tariff speculation grows, Lonski views them as a strategic bargaining tool rather than an imminent economic threat. Meanwhile, strong corporate earnings and tight credit spreads suggest that businesses remain optimistic, reinforcing market stability. No Trader Talk episode is complete without a culinary touch. Be sure to check out Polcari's latest recipe for giambotta—a hearty Italian stew that, much like investing, is all about balance and patience. Watch more episodes of Trader Talk here. Researchers say China's DeepSeek chatbot is linked to state telecom, raising data privacy concerns
The website of the Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek, whose chatbot became the most downloaded app in the United States, has computer code that could send some user login information to a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company that has been barred from operating in the United States, security researchers say. The web login page of DeepSeek’s chatbot contains heavily obfuscated computer script that when deciphered shows connections to computer infrastructure owned by China Mobile, a state-owned telecommunications company. In its privacy policy, DeepSeek acknowledged storing data on servers inside the People’s Republic of China.

The market's 'problem' is valuations, this strategist says
The market (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) seems to breathe a sigh of relief after tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada were delayed. Barclays head of US equity strategy Venu Krishna sits down with Julie Hyman and Josh Lipton on Market Domination to discuss his concerns about the policy environment around President Trump's tariff threats and China's own retaliatory tariffs. "Ever since the election, I would argue that the market has been disproportionately pricing the good news that is the pro-growth policies like deregulation [and tax cuts] are being priced quite optimistically," Krishna says. "What is not being priced is the impact of a more aggressive stance on immigration and a more aggressive stance on tariffs, because if you talk to the majority of the economists, the view is that these two, tariffs and immigration, on the margin are definitely more inflationary and will have a negative impact on growth," he adds, explaining that "the question" is "to what extent is that a buffer to some extent for the pro-growth policies?" The strategist highlights accelerating earnings growth but notes, "The problem for this market is on the valuation front." "I'm not arguing [valuations are] rich, but it's quite fully valued," he says, adding that what that means is "any negative catalyst" could be especially impactful for the market. Uber tops revenue estimates on strong holiday season ride-hailing, delivery demand
But the San Francisco-based company joined a chorus of U.S. technology firms in warning that a strong dollar would weigh on current-quarter results, and forecast quarterly bookings largely below Wall Street estimates. Already the dominant ride-hailing service in North America, Uber has been trying to convince investors that it has more room for growth by attracting more businesses and teens to its platform, as well as expanding to less saturated markets. Its business-focused service reported a 50% surge in bookings for the last three months of 2024, thanks to return-to-office mandates, while Uber for Teens posted a similar jump, and is now available in about 50 countries.
