New ‘Dune’ movie co-stars not one but two Kansas Citians. But what’s on their lips?

No, that isn’t a smudge of barbecue sauce on the lower lip of the noblemen’s advisers in the new “Dune” movie.

But you could be forgiven for thinking so because the actors playing them are both from Kansas City.

For the good guys, Thufir Hawat is the right-hand man for Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac) and his brooding son, Paul (Timothée Chalamet). He’s played by Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird,” “Manchester by the Sea”), who grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, and is an alum of Sumner High School (now Sumner Academy).

For the bad guys, Piter De Vries advises the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). He’s played by David Dastmalchian (“The Suicide Squad,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Ant-Man”), who grew up in Overland Park and is an alum of Shawnee Mission South High School.

In the world of “Dune,” computers are banned (long story, read the Frank Herbert novel). So instead, “Mentats,” or human computers, do the big thinking for powerful leaders.

That stain on their lip isn’t from barbecue, not surprisingly. It’s from the Juice of Sapho, sort of a major caffeine rush for better mental prowess. Side effect: It stains the lips.
