Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has revealed one of the "most painful" things he had to cut from the upcoming movie.

Despite the adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel Dune being split into two movies, Villeneuve was unable to include every detail, leading to elements of the source material being cut.

"When you adapt, there's always some kind of violence toward the original material," Villeneuve told Entertainment Weekly. "You have to change things, you have to bend, you have to make painful choices."

Dune: Part Two sees changes to key characters such as the Fremen warrior Chani (played by Zendaya), who is much more independent and outspoken against her lover Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet) compared to in the novel. Anya Taylor-Joy's character Alia also appears differently than how she is portrayed in the book.

Of course, there are some characters that aren't featured at all in Dune: Part Two. Villeneuve had to make the difficult decision of which characters wouldn't be returning.

"One of the most painful choices for me on this one was Thufir Hawat," he revealed. "He's a character I absolutely love, but I decided right at the beginning that I was making a Bene Gesserit adaptation. That meant that Mentats are not as present as they should be, but it's the nature of the adaptation."

Mentats are humans who have been trained from a young age to perform high-level mathematic and strategic calculations. Stephen McKinley Henderson played Mentat Thufir Hawat in the first movie but did not appear in the second part, due to Villeneuve's vision for the sequel.

Meanwhile, Villeneuve has already started working on a potential third Dune movie, though it has yet to be confirmed. "We are in early stages. We are in the right direction. There's a lot of work that has been done, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done in order to have something solid to shoot." he told Digital Spy.

Dune: Part Two is out now in cinemas. Dune is available to watch on Netflix.
