The US says it pushed retraction of a famine warning for north Gaza. Aid groups express concern
A lead organization monitoring for food crises around the world withdrew a new report this week warning of imminent famine in north Gaza under what it called Israel's “near-total blockade,” after the U.S. asked for its retraction, U.S. officials told The Associated Press. The move follows public criticism of the report from the U.S. ambassador to Israel. The rare public challenge from the Biden administration of the work of the U.S.-funded Famine Early Warning System, which is meant to reflect the data-driven analysis of unbiased experts, drew accusations from aid and human-rights figures of possible U.S. political interference.

Special educational needs children 'segregated and left to struggle in wrong schools to save money'
Children with special educational needs are being "segregated" and left to struggle in the wrong schools because councils are trying to "save on costs", parents have told Sky News. Maire Leigh Wilson, whose four-year-old son has Down's syndrome, says she "shudders to think" where he would be now had she not been in a "constant battle" with her council. Mrs Leigh Wilson wanted her son Aidan to go to a mainstream school with additional specialist support, but her council, who decide what is known as a child's Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), wanted him to attend a special school.

Canada ministers to meet Trump aides in Florida over tariff risks
Canada's new finance minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly will meet aides to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in Florida on Friday to discuss the risks of imposing new trade tariffs, the Canadian government said. Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on imports from Canada when he takes office in January unless the country reduces the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S. LeBlanc's office said in a statement on Thursday that the two ministers would highlight "the negative impacts that the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods would have on both Canada and the United States."

In a time of change Sky News spent a critical year on a farm - find out what we learnt
Many months before farmers found themselves on the front pages of newspapers, after protesting in Whitehall against the new government's inheritance tax rules, we at Sky News embarked upon a project. This, after all, was the year the new post-Brexit regime for farm payments would come into full force. The upshot of these deals is that UK farmers are now competing with two of the world's major food exporters, who can export more into Britain than they do currently.

Oil prices set for weekly gain on China stimulus optimism
The World Bank on Thursday raised its forecast for China's economic growth in 2024 and 2025, but warned that subdued household and business confidence, along with headwinds in the property sector, would keep weighing it down next year. China on Thursday revised upwards the size of its economy by 2.7%, but said the change would have little impact on growth this year, as policymakers pledged more stimulus to spur expansion in 2025. Chinese authorities have agreed to issue 3 trillion yuan ($411 billion) worth of special treasury bonds next year, as Beijing ramps up fiscal stimulus to revive a faltering economy.

US condemns Hong Kong bounties, passport revocations for democrats
The U.S. State Department said that Hong Kong's offered bounties for six more pro-democracy campaigners who were deemed to have violated national security laws and the revoking of the passports of seven more amounted to intimidation efforts. "We reject the Hong Kong government's efforts to intimidate and silence individuals who choose to make the United States their home," the U.S. State Department said in a statement on Thursday, adding some of the targeted individuals were based in the United States.
