Drone Footage Shows Trail of La Palma Volcano Lava Flow

Drone footage showing the trail of destruction left by the lava flow from Spain’s La Palma volcano was published on Saturday, October 23.

Lava had extended to cover 891.9 hectares (3.44 square miles) of the island by Saturday, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Satellite imagery analyzed by scientists also showed that 2,143 buildings had been destroyed by volcanic activity.

Lava and ash continued to spew from the volcano after a portion of the main cone atop the Cumbre Vieja volcano collapsed on October 23.

Residents of the island have weathered continuous volcanic and seismic activity since the volcano began erupting on September 19. Credit: IGME via Storyful
