Driver killed crashing into tree near Lexington County road, SC Highway Patrol says

One person was killed in a late night crash in Lexington County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said Sunday.

The single-vehicle collision happened at about 10 p.m. by Pine Plain Road, according to Lance Cpl. Nick Pye.

A 2008 Honda sedan was driving south when it ran off the left side of the road near the intersection with Huckabee Mill Road, Pye said. That’s in the Gaston area, between Interstate 26 and U.S. 321.

After leaving the road, the Honda smashed into a tree and the driver died, according to Pye.

The Lexington County Coroner’s Office is expected to publicly identify the driver after notifying the next of kin.

There was no word if the driver wore a seat belt.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the vehicle to veer off the road was not available, but the crash is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Through Thursday, 495 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, 1,194 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.

At least 19 people have died in Lexington County crashes in 2022, DPS reported. Last year, 57 deaths were reported there, according to DPS data.
