Dozens of products are affected by the Jif recall. Here’s how to find out if you have one.
The recent nationwide Jif peanut butter recall due to salmonella contamination now includes dozens of other products that are made with peanut butter from the J.M. Smucker Company.
Jif is not just a popular brand with consumers at grocery stores, but is also used as an ingredient in peanut butter flavored treats made and sold by numerous companies.
Among these companies, there’s Miami-based Fresh Del Monte that recalled about 10 brands sold under convenience store brand names 7-Eleven, Circle-K and Get Go.
Wawa pulled its Apple and Peanut Butter Dipper product.
Fudgeamentals and Walmart brands, were also affected. Multiple Country Fresh products sold in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and 15 other states are on the recall list. Mary’s Harvest also uses Jif in its fruit and snack trays. Add Garden Cut and Euphoria Chocolate Company to the list, too.
And Albertson’s Deli Snack Peanut Butter and Trail Mix Combo is recalled, also, since it’s got that tasty Jif peanut butter flavor as its ingredient.
Not all of these products are sold in every state, either, so it can get a bit complicated to know whether you ought to consume what you may already have in your pantry and cupboards. Peanut butter and many of its associated products have long shelf lives.
At least 14 people have gotten sick from the outbreak in 12 states, as of May 26, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Florida is not among the states, currently, with reported infections. Georgia, South and North Carolina and New York are among the states with reported sicknesses.
“The true number of sick people is likely higher than the number reported, and the outbreak may not be limited to the states with known illnesses. This is because some people recover without medical care and are not tested for salmonella,” the CDC said.
What is salmonella?
Salmonella are a group of bacteria that can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever, according to the FDA. Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. More severe cases can include a high fever, body aches, headaches, lethargy, a rash, blood in the urine or stool and in some cases may be fatal.
How to find out if a product is in recall
But there are ways to check the recall notices.
For starters, if you missed the main and recent notice regarding Jif peanut butters, check your Jif jars and packages and look for lot code numbers between 1274425 and 2140425, which were manufactured in the Lexington plant. These are the initial Jif products under the Jif banner that ought to be discarded or returned for a refund.
Jif also posted a listing of its various peanut butter brands on its website.
