Don’t let the Colleyville synagogue hostage crisis divide us with religious hatred

Don’t give in to religious rancor

As Gov. Greg Abbott’s tweet announcing that the Colleyville synagogue hostages were safe spread, most people let out a collective sigh of relief, knowing that their brothers and sisters were unharmed. Meanwhile, a small group of bigots played the blame game, creating discord and maligning another religion.

Millions of Muslims, Christians and Jews across the country were praying for the safety of the hostages. As I drove to my mosque for the evening prayers, I thought about the safety of my own congregation. During prayers, I also thought of my Jewish brothers and sisters in distress and prayed for their well-being.

In these times of polarization, let’s not give in to the hate and divisiveness. We must unite and pray for the alleviation of mankind’s pain.

No masking equals no schooling

It is so frustrating to schoolchildren, parents, teachers and staff for schools to close because of sicknesses. What if everyone had been wearing a mask? That just might have held the spread down.

Masks stop airborne germs. Parents, help your children protect themselves and their teachers.

Democrats just want to control you

As with many issues, Democrats say that if you don’t support their election legislation, you are a racist. One of the issues is voter identification. The claim is that requiring an ID to vote hurts minorities and the elderly. I’m considered elderly, by the way, and I had no problem going to vote early.

Didn’t the Democrats just win a presidential election with record numbers of votes cast? Do you not need an ID to fly, open a bank account or rent an apartment? And now you have to show ID and vaccination status to get into restaurants in some cities with majority Democratic leadership. Is that racist?

It’s all about control, and the Democrats are deathly afraid of losing it.

Who the GOP is trying to thwart

President Joe Biden gave a direct and accurate description of Republican motives on voting rights laws. But these days, Republicans are allergic to truth. The GOP agenda is more Bull Connor nonsense. It’s not white people they’re trying to strip voting rights from.

Pitts gets it all wrong again

Once again, Leonard Pitts Jr. gets it wrong. In his column, “Once upon a time, he was the only one,” (Jan. 14, 9A) about talented Black actors and entertainers, he neglected or chose to exclude the iconic Hattie McDaniel. She was the first Black actor to win an Oscar.

Pitts wrote: “Once upon a time we — African Americans — had only one. His name was Sidney Poitier.” Poitier, was, no doubt, an incredibly talented actor and great American. It’s too bad, though, that McDaniel does not fit Pitts’ narrative.

Bad behavior let down the Cowboys

To the referees who officiated the Cowboys’ playoff game: Even though I agreed that some of the calls were bad, I am highly disappointed in the few bad actors in the stands who threw objects at you when you ran off the field.

This is not the Texas way. We are not like Philadelphia fans. On behalf of these few bad actors, I want to apologize. Thank you all for doing such a hard job.
