Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel addresses Hill/Waddle, Michel, offensive line, more

Quick hits from Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel’s Tuesday news conference:

▪ Mike McDaniel won’t have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle race to see who’s the faster of the two. But he won’t discourage it if the players choose to do it. Hill has spoken of the two racing.

“I’m not going to tell them not to race,” McDaniel said. “I love competitors. I also am not going to force them to race.”

McDaniel declined to say which of the two has timed faster in OTAs but said multiple Dolphins are running 21 or 22 mph.

▪ Receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“Lynn Bowden does have an interesting skill set,” he said. “I’ve always been drawn to players who have experience at multiple positions, particularly at the quarterback because [of how they see the game].”

▪ He said of running back Raheem Mostert — who sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 49ers’ opener last season: “His expectations are to play Week 1, and we are not going to rush it. He’s come too far to have a setback. He’s diligently working day in, day out. When he’s ready he’ll be on the field.”

▪ McDaniel said of the seven teams that he has been a coach with, “this [offensive line] is as athletic and capable of any group.”

▪ The Dolphins will have joint practices with Tampa Bay and Philadelphia.

▪ McDaniel can’t yet comment on the signing of Melvin Ingram because he hasn’t signed, but said of recent addition Sony Michel: “Sony, you have an opportunity to add a player of his caliber, of his pedigree, him as a human being and multiple Super Bowl winner. We jumped at the opportunity. His interest fit our interest. Competition at the Dolphins is only a good thing. Nobody shies away from competition.”

▪ He said “the science” suggests resting veterans during some OTA sessions. So McDaniel advised not to be alarmed if we don’t see some veterans at this Tuesday OTA session, which is the first of five open to media and not to fans. Live tweeting and blogging by reporters isn’t permitted.

“It’s not best served for them to be out there; the best thing for the Dolphins is that each and every player be ready for week 1,” McDaniel said.
