Dog missing for 2 months is found deep in cave by spelunkers in Missouri

A group of people exploring a cave in southeastern Missouri rescued a dog, then reunited her with her owner, who had not seen the pet in two months.

Rick Haley detailed the rescue in a Facebook post on Saturday, Aug. 6. He said he and several spelunking groups entered the Tom Moore Cave in Perryville, where they came across a dog “not in good shape.”

With help from fellow spelunker Gerry Keene, Haley helped rescue the dog by putting it in a duffel bag with her head sticking out. Haley said the dog was “totally cooperative” as he and Keene brought her to safety.

“We moved her 500 feet to a very tight, awkward, vertical climb, handing her hand to hand upward to the surface,” Haley said.

When fire officials helped the spelunkers go door to door to reunite the dog with her owner, they learned the pet’s name is Abby and she had been missing since June 9, KTVI reported.

Haley said Abby “was happy to be out,” adding that he has “no idea” how the dog ended up deep in the cave.

The Tom Moore Cave is a part of the Moore Cave system, which is one of the largest cave systems in Missouri.
