Moldova's pro-Western incumbent Maia Sandu claims election win
STORY: Pro-Western candidate Maia Sandu on Sunday claimed victory in Moldova’s closely-fought presidential election. The vote has been marred by allegations of Russian interference, which the Kremlin denies. With 98% of ballots counted, Sandu lead with around 54% of the vote over her pro-Moscow rival, Alexandr Stoianoglo. In her victory speech Sunday evening, the 52-year-old vowed to be a president for all Moldovans. "Moldova, you are victorious! Today, dear Moldovans, you have given a lesson in democracy, worthy of being written in history books. Today, you have saved Moldova! In our choice for a dignified future, no one lost." Sandu has pushed to leave Moscow’s orbit and join the European Union. Her victory is seen by her supporters as a sign that people back her strong pro-Western stance. But the results Sunday also showed that Stoianoglo dominated across swathes of the country. That suggests Sandu’s party may face a stiff challenge at parliamentary elections next summer that will decide the make-up of the government. On the campaign trail, Stoianoglo said he supported EU integration, but that he also wanted to strengthen ties with Russia. Sandu portrayed him as a Trojan horse for the Kremlin's interests, which he denied. :: Berlin, Germany:: November 3, 2024The run-off vote saw a record number of Moldova’s expatriate voters cast their ballots. Inside Moldova's borders, the results showed Sandu actually lost by a small margin. By contrast, she looked on course to win more than 80% of the diaspora vote. Sandu shouted out that voting block in her victory speech: "Diaspora! You are amazing! Our diaspora has given us yet another lesson today, one that we should all learn from. Moldovans abroad have shown once again that Moldova beats as strongly in their hearts as it does in ours back home." Moldova’s future has been in the spotlight since Russia began its full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in 2022. Brussels is closely watching the election, after Sandu set Moldova on the long path of EU accession talks in June. Her win comes a week after Georgia, another ex-Soviet state seeking EU membership, re-elected a ruling party regarded in the West as increasingly pro-Russian.

Turkey replaces pro-Kurdish mayors with state officials in southeast
Turkey stripped three elected pro-Kurdish mayors of their posts in southeastern cities on Monday, for convictions and charges on terrorism-related offences, the interior ministry said, appointing state officials in their places instead. All belonged to the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, which has 57 seats in the national parliament. Last week, a mayor from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) was arrested after prosecutors accused him of belonging to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), banned as a terrorist group in Turkey.
