Initially buoyed by a surge in online shopping during the pandemic, paper and packaging firms faced a slowdown when economies reopened. Peer Packaging Corp of America reported a quarterly revenue beat on Tuesday from higher pricing, improved production and a recovery in demand for its corrugated packaging products. Earlier in the year, European packaging giant Smurfit Kappa, said the worst of the slowdown in terms of demand for paper and containerboard seemed behind it.

Russia fines actress who hosted 'almost naked' party over her calls for peace
A Moscow court on Thursday imposed a 50,000-ruble ($560) fine on a TV presenter and actress who gained notoriety for hosting an “almost naked” party, saying her social media posts calling for peace discredited the military. Anastasia Ivleeva sparked an explosion of public indignation in the increasingly traditionalist country when she hosted a party in December encouraging guests to wear almost nothing. Ivleeva did not appear in court Thursday for the non-criminal case, in which she was fined for two social media posts in the early days of Russia's invasion of Ukraine that called for peace and negotiations.

NFL to open academy in Australia to identify and develop young prospects
The NFL will expand its international search for talent by opening an academy in rugby-mad Australia to develop promising teenagers in the Asia-Pacific region into college and pro prospects. The NFL Academy will open in September for student athletes aged 12 to 18, following recruitment camps taking place this summer in Australia and New Zealand, the league announced on Thursday. Ahead of the NFL Draft, the announcement says the region is full of talent such as Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jordan Mailata, a 6-foot-8 (2.08-meter) Australian who was deemed too big for rugby league.

SVB-owner First Citizens' profit beats estimates on interest income strength
The Raleigh, North Carolina-based lender has been boosted by its buyout of SVB, which collapsed last year after a deposit flight spiraled out of control and led to the biggest banking crisis in 15 years. Since SVB's collapse, banking giants including JPMorgan Chase and HSBC have tried to beef up their businesses catering to startups and venture capital firms. "It's been over one year since SVB became part of First Citizens, and we continue to successfully execute on our integration efforts, which are accelerating the momentum of our franchise," CEO Frank Holding Jr. said.

UPDATE 1-Bristol Myers posts quarterly loss, revenue rises 5%
Bristol Myers Squibb on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss as charges related to its recent acquisitions of Karuna Therapeutics, RayzeBio and Mirati Therapeutics offset a 5% increase in revenue. The New Jersey-based drugmaker posted a loss of $4.40 per share, including charges for acquired research and development. On a net basis, Bristol's loss was $5.89 per share.

UPDATE 1-Bombardier burns more cash to ramp up business jet production
Bombardier reported a higher-than-expected cash burn in the first quarter on Thursday as the Canadian planemaker builds up inventory to support increased production of business jets amid resilient demand for private flying. Cash burn for the quarter through March rose 57% to $387 million, above analysts' estimates of $361 million, according to LSEG data. The Montreal-based company is facing pressure from rival General Dynamics' Gulfstream, which had its flagship G700 luxury jet certified last month by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
