'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' Suffers Historic MCU Box Office Drop In Second Opening Weekend

Since the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, audiences flooded to the theaters to watch the most recent Marvel film. The film later earned $187.4 million USD at the domestic bo office and $265 million USD globally. While the second Doctor Strange installment garnered the 11th highest-grossing opening weekend of all-time, the second weekend saw the film suffer a historic box office decline as an MCU film.

In it second weekend, Doctor Strange 2 grossed only $16.7 million USD, a 67.5% drop from the over $180 million USD opening weekend. The number stats show an 81% decline from the $90.7 million USD earned on opening day. Projections for the second weekend see the film dropping between 65-69%, with a gross of $60-$65 million USD.

To put into perspective, while Spider-Man: No Way Home dropped 67.5% in its second weekend, which just so happened to be a Christmas holiday, the film was still able to become the third highest-grossing film of all time, hitting a domestic box office at $804.6 million USD. Other second weekend slumps comparable to Doctor Strange 2 include Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice which fell 81.6%, Black Widow whih fell 79%, Eternals went down 74.6% and Captain America: Civil War falling 74%. Despit the decline for Doctor Strange 2, the film has raked in $688 million USD worldwide, in comparison to the first film which hit $677 million USD.
