How to DIY your own upholstered chair

If you don’t have the budget to match your expensive taste when it comes to home decor, a DIY dupe is your best friend. If you’re looking to spruce up your living space, a repurposed throw blanket, a staple gun, and a little elbow grease go a long way! On this episode of In The Know: DIY, TikTok star and DIY expert, Tay BeepBoop (@taybeepboop) shows us how to make a DIY dupe for a viral name-brand bouclé chair that you may have seen all over social media.

Tools & Materials Used

  • Heavy Duty Staples

  • Scissors

  • Box Cutter or X-Acto Knife

Step 1: Place The Blanket

First, remove the cushion from the chair. Then, drape the blanket over the cushion-less chair, pulling it and positioning it so it fits nicely. Put the cushion back—on top of the blanket—and continue to position the blanket around it.

Step 2: Staple The Blanket To The Top Of The Chair 

Begin stapling your blanket to the chair from the top. This will ensure that the blanket keeps its shape around the chair.

Step 3: Staple The Blanket To The Base Of The Chair 

Tip your chair over and begin stapling the blanket to the base. Don’t worry about any excess blanket fabric.

Step 4: Staple The Blanket To The Seat Of The Chair 

Position the chair rightside up again, and staple the blanket into the seat of the chair (beneath the cushion).

Step 5: Staple The Blanket To The Arms Of The Chair 

Cut off any excess blanket fabric in front of the arms of the chair, and then staple what’s left around the armrests while strategically placing the seam.

Step 6: Cover The Seat Cushion
Lay the blanket fabric flat on the ground and place the cushion on top of it, top side down. Staple the blanket around the cushion, removing any excess fabric.
