Dixons Carphone “winning online” as demand for TVs and computers high in lockdown

The boss of Dixons Carphone has said the retailer is “winning online”, as the firm cheered sales growth.

The electricals retailer, which trades as Currys PC World in the UK and Ireland, said electricals like-for-like revenue rose 11% in the 10 weeks to January 9.

In the UK and Ireland, there was 8% growth, and online sales more than doubled.

The FTSE 250 group saw high demand for large screen TVs and in all areas of computing and gaming.

It has had to shut shops at various points for Covid-19 lockdowns, but still expects to deliver full year profits in line with market expectations.

Chief executive Alex Baldock said: “We're winning online, where we're the biggest and fastest-growing specialist technology retailer in all our markets. And even where stores have been closed, our work to bring the best of digital and physical shopping to every customer has borne fruit in such innovations as our 1-hour drive-thru Order & Collect and ShopLive.”

ShopLive is where workers in stores can do live video chats with customers at home showing how certain products work.

In addition, Dixons Carphone today said Bruce Marsh will join as finance chief with effect from July 12.

He has been finance director, UK and Ireland, at Tesco since 2015.
