Diver vanishes off coast of popular California island, rescuers say. Search underway

Rescuers are searching for a diver who vanished off the coast of Catalina, a popular California island, authorities say.

The dive ship “Cee Ray” contacted the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders at 2:10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, to report the missing diver, according to a news release.

Watchstanders launched two helicopter crews, a 29-foot response boat crew, and the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, the release said.

Coast Guard rescuers will continue their search and rescue efforts along with Baywatch Cabrillo and Baywatch Avalon, the release said.

Catalina Island is 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

Details about the diver and the circumstances surrounding their disappearance were not immediately available.
