Disney boss Bob Iger has confirmed plans for the studio to "reduce" the number of Marvel releases per year.

Fans have been used to expecting around four movies and four TV shows per year, though in an earnings call, the company CEO explained that they want to "focus more on quality" rather than quantity (via The Hollywood Reporter).

He said that Disney is moving past “a vestige, basically a desire in the past to increase volume,” adding: “I’ve been working hard with the studio to reduce output and focus more on quality, that’s particularly true with Marvel.”

Opening up further about plans for years to come, Iger said: “We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four, and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two or at the maximum three.

“And we’re working hard on what that path is, we’ve got a couple of good films in ’25 and then we’re heading to more Avengers, which we’re extremely excited about.

“Overall I feel great about the slate, it’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on, the team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing is second to none.”

The last Marvel movie was Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels, which became Marvel's lowest-grossing movie last year – though Iger suggested at the time that was due to production during the pandemic.

Previous 2023 movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania also proved to be a box office and critical disappointment.

The next movie in the slate is Deadpool & Wolverine, which is due to be released in July and will see Ryan Reynolds's titular superhero cross paths with Hugh Jackman's Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in cinemas on July 26.
