Disney Officially Announces a ‘Frozen’ Sequel

Disney isn’t letting go of Frozen any time soon.

The Mouse House announced on Thursday during its annual shareholder call that it is officially in development on a sequel to the smash-hit animated film Frozen, which won Oscars for Best Animated Film and Original Song in 2014. The news comes just a day before a short film follow-up to the cultural phenomenon, Frozen Fever, hits theaters ahead of Disney’s live-action Cinderella.

The sequel will return directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, who also helmed the new short film. Lee is also working on the book for the upcoming Broadway adaptation of the film.

The original film, which made $1.24 billion worldwide and set home video records, has been absolutely ubiquitous over the last 16 months. It has been a goldmine for Disney, with ancillary benefits that include massive album sales for its soundtrack; an ice-dancing show; theme park attractions; and huge merchandise sales over the Holiday Season.

There’s no release date for the film quite yet, though it would perhaps follow the studio’s South Pacific-set animate film Moana, which is set for 2018.
