BROCKTON – With 73 teams registered in five divisions – three men’s divisions with 49 teams, and two women’s divisions with 24 teams, Pigstock 2022 was a resounding success.
The fun started Thursday evening with a special tribute to the Dirt Pigs’ favourite fan, who’s sorely missed, Helen Clancy – and wrapped up Sunday – three full days of great ball, plenty of fun and spectacular weather.
One of the highlights was the Saturday night dance, and another was family fun day on Sunday – entertainment for the kids.
Considering this was the first post-COVID tournament for the Dirt Pigs, the turnout was gratifying. Diamonds in Walkerton, Cargill, Formosa and Chepstow were in tip-top condition and busy, and the beer gardens were even busier, keeping ball players hydrated and fed.
The competition was both fun and fierce. This tournament is about having a great time, but the quality of ball did not disappoint.
After 40 years, the Dirt Pigs know how to run a great tournament, and they proved that sitting out a couple of years during the pandemic didn’t slow them down.
The tournament that started with a bunch of guys who liked playing ball and contributing to their communities of Walkerton, Chepstow and Cargill, keeps getting better. This year saw local campgrounds and hotels booked solid, restaurants busy and streets filled with visitors.
Hosting one of the best-run and largest tournaments around is only part of what the Dirt Pigs do. There’s also the Foundation, which has contributed an estimated $300,000 to dozens of worthy charities and causes over the past 25 years. Whether it’s helping young athletes travel to compete at the national level, providing assistance to people following a fire, or giving a boost to the local hospital, the Dirt Pigs are there to help.
