Denzel Washington reunites with Antoine Fuqua for new Netflix movie

Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua will reunite once more for a new film from Netflix.

The pair have collaborated five times in the past – Training Day, The Magnificent Seven and The Equalizer trilogy – and will renew their partnership with the historical epic, which centres on the life of Carthaginian general, Hannibal.

The real-life figure fought the Roman Republic during the Second Punic War, with TUDUM describing the general as “one of the greatest military leaders in recorded history.”

Washington and Fuqua will also produce the project, with Gladiator and Skyfall screenwriter John Logan set to pen the script. The project is currently untitled and yet to have a release date, though the streaming service did say it would air in the “near future.”

Washington and Fuqua reunited earlier this year for The Equalizer 3, which saw former US Marine and DIA officer Robert McCall come out of retirement to help the residents of a small town in Italy, which is under the thumb of the local mafia.

Fuqua, who also directed Olympus Has Fallen and Emancipation, spoke exclusively with Digital Spy earlier this year about the final instalment in the action trilogy, revealing that it was the most challenging entry to shoot.

“The final moment of Vincent was tough, because we were in Naples, in the streets. And the weather. Some tough nights there,” he said. “Many challenges, of course. The language, shooting in a difficult place like the Amalfi Coast.

“Beautiful as it is, it's very complicated to get all of the equipment and everything there, but it was absolutely worth it when you look at the shots, and look at the location, it's amazing. And all the people there were incredible, so yeah, all worthwhile I believe.”

The Equalizer 3 is available on DVD and Blu-ray from December 11.
