Deja Vu as Mansfield Summit knocks off Colleyville Heritage for state semifinal berth

Mansfield Summit and Colleyville Heritage met in a playoff game for the second straight season Friday night.

The Jaguars beat the Panthers in a regional game last season, 34-31.

Another game between two teams in the same district...and another Summit win.

For the second straight season, Summit sent Heritage home after the Jaguars slugged out a 21-9 victory in a Class 5A Division 1 state quarterfinal at Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex.

Mansfield Summit (11-3) advances to the state semis for the second year in a row where it faces College Station (14-0) next week. College Station knocked off defending state champ Denton Ryan 26-21 on Friday.

It was deja vu all over again as Heritage came into the night as district champs from 4-5A D1. Summit was second this season. The Jags were fourth last season.

But unlike the previous two meetings, the offensive fireworks were limited. Heritage won 35-34 in October. Summit won last season, 34-31.

However, the Jaguars’ fireworks came on the defensive side, which they’ve been doing all season long. Summit picked Colleyville Heritage off four times and held a team averaging 42 points per game to only three Bryan Hansen field goals.

Summit quarterback David Hopkins and receiver Bryan Spotwood Jr. connected on both of the team’s two touchdowns in the first half.

Hopkins threw an out-rout to Spotwood near the Heritage 35 and the Summit receiver took it the rest of the way for a 61-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead with eight minutes left in the first quarter.

Spotwood caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Hopkins to up the Summit lead to 14-3 with 10 minutes to go in the second quarter.

Despite the loss, the Colleyville Heritage defense also played well. Summit came in averaging almost 37 points per game. The Panthers held the Jags to 14 in the first half and didn’t allow a score in the second half until the 1:40 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Jaguars looked to add to the lead late in the second quarter, but Parker Roe halted their drive with a Heritage interception as Summit took a 14-6 advantage into intermission.

But the story of the night was once again the Summit defense.

Johnny Everitt came away with the first Summit pick with 9:32 to play in the opening period. Hansen’s first field goal came late in the quarter to trim the deficit to 7-3.

The Panthers got the ball first in the third quarter, but that drive was stopped on a Tavare Smith Jr. interception. Summit almost turned the turnover into points, going inside the red zone, but the Jaguars missed a field goal leaving the score at 14-6.

Heritage answered by driving the football across the 50, but Ahmaad Moses got the Summit D its third interception of the evening.

That turned into a Summit punt and after a personal foul on the Jaguars, Heritage had the ball at the Summit 25, but settled for Hansen’s third field goal, a 44-yarder to trim the lead to five with 18 seconds left in the third.

Summit had to punt again and Heritage drove the ball looking for the lead, but on a fourth down at the Summit 31, Joseph Adedire dropped Heritage quarterback Luke Ullrich to give the Jags the ball.

Again, the Panthers got the ball back and drove into Summit territory. Heritage got to the Summit 20 midway through the fourth quarter, but after a holding penalty and Legend Journey sack, Hansen came on for another field goal attempt.

Hansen missed from 50, but Summit was called for a 5-yard running into the kicker penalty. Hansen lined up from 45 and the attempt was blocked keeping Summit ahead 14-9 with 5:30 to play.

The Panthers got the ball back after another Summit punt and on a fourth down, Ullrich avoided multiple tackles to keep the play alive. His throw was caught for a first down, but the officials ruled the throw came past the line of scrimmage. It was a loss on downs and Summit retained possession with three minutes left.

Summit running back Keon Hobbs scored the dagger when he ran in a hand-off from 18 yards out to extend the lead to 21-9 with 1:40 remaining. Moses sealed the win with his second pick and Summit’s fourth and the Jags took a knee to win the 5A D1 Region 1 championship.
