Shoe retailer Deichmann has increased its UK store footprint even as lockdowns dented revenues and disrupted the business, accounts show.

The UK arm of the family-run business, which is headquartered in Germany, said seven new shops were opened last year, bringing its store numbers here to 116.

It counts sites in Enfield, Stratford and Wood Green among its London branches. Stores in opened last year included in York and Ipswich.

Expansion came despite the firm facing Covid-19 disruption. In 2020 it saw significant online growth but had to close shops at various points for lockdowns.

Accounts filed at Companies House reveal UK turnover dropped to £64 million last year from £103.6 million in the prior 12 months. Pre-tax losses deepened to £12.5 million from a £948,000 loss.

A company spokesman said the retailer is continuing to expand in the UK “which is an important market” for the Deichmann Group, and the firm sees potential for more growth.

Deichmann is celebrating its 20-year anniversary in the UK this year.
