Macro markets have basically frozen ahead of this week's big U.S. inflation releases, with sideshow entertainment provided by a fresh burst in activity in so-called 'meme stocks' while earnings updates and deals sagas dominated overseas. With Wednesday's April consumer price report this week's focus, Tuesday's release of the month's producer price index provides the appetizer - with core annual factory gate price readings expected to be steady at 2.4%. Although these critical data inputs likely set the tone for the public rather than the other way around, the backdrop on household inflation expectations has not been great.

In hundreds of deaths where police used force meant to stop someone without killing them, officers violated well-known guidelines for safely restraining and subduing people — not simply once or twice, but multiple times. Officers at times prematurely resorted to weapons or physical holds during routine calls or misread a person’s confusion as defiance in medical emergencies, setting off a string of mistakes. For its investigation, AP catalogued 1,036 deaths over a decade’s time after officers had used force not involving their guns.

STORY: Profits have surged at iPhone-maker Foxconn. They jumped 72% over the first quarter. That fell short of forecasts, but marked the third straight quarter of rising profits. It’s not consumer electronics driving gains for the world’s largest maker of gadgets for big brands, however. The firm expects demand for such products to be flat this year. Instead, the Taiwan giant is another tech firm excited about AI. It says products like ChatGPT are driving a surge in demand for servers. Foxconn is predicting a big rise in revenue this year partly as a result. That could also lift the value of its big stake in Sharp. Last year, Foxconn had to take a writedown over the Japanese firm’s troubles. Now it says the worst is behind Sharp, with one of its factories to be turned into an AI data center. Foxconn shares have risen around 65% this year on hopes that it is set to benefit from the AI boom.

OPEC stuck to its forecast for relatively strong growth in global oil demand in 2024 on Tuesday and said there was a chance the world economy could do better than expected this year. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, in a monthly report, said world oil demand will rise by 2.25 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2024 and by 1.85 million bpd in 2025. This is the last report before OPEC+, which groups OPEC and allies led by Russia, meets on June 1 to set output policy.
