Float Financial, which aims to be the Brex of Canada, lands US$48.5M Series B
Float Financial, an expense management and corporate card startup focused on the Canadian market, has raised $48.5 million in a Series B funding round. The Toronto-based fintech likens itself to U.S.-based fintech giants Brex and Ramp but says it is different in that its sole focus is on Canadian SMBs, which CEO and co-founder Rob Khazzam said are “overlooked due to Canada’s banking monopoly and tough economic climate.” Goldman Sachs Growth Equity led the financing, which included participation from OMERS Ventures, FJ Labs, Teralys, and existing investor Garage Capital.

Texas man charged with stalking WNBA and Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark
Authorities in Indianapolis have charged a 55-year-old Texas man with felony stalking of Indiana Fever star and WNBA rookie of the year Caitlin Clark. Michael Thomas Lewis is accused of repeated and continued harassment of the 22-year-old Clark beginning on Dec. 16, the Marion County prosecutor's office wrote in a Saturday court filing. Lewis posted numerous messages on Clark's X account, according to an affidavit from a Marion County sheriff's lieutenant.

Brazil's Nubank partners with convenience store Oxxo to expand in Mexico
Brazilian digital lender Nubank has signed an agreement with Mexican convenience store chain Oxxo, run by FEMSA, to expand its cash deposit and withdrawal network in the North American country, the firms announced on Monday. Warren Buffett-backed Nubank, one of the Latin America's largest firms by market value, has been aiming to scale its operations in Mexico and Colombia after growing in Brazil, its home market, where it has more than 100 million customers. While Nubank's Brazil operations are nearly fully digital, the lender has been using different strategies to grow in Mexico, where cash remains a top payment method.
