Mary Kom Loses to Ingrit Valencia in Round of 16

Round 3: Mary started out on the front foot in the final round, getting in a right early on in what was an intense contest. While the Indian looked to be tiring a bit in the final round, Valencia attacked and eventually won the contest by split decision.

Round 2: Fast hands and fast feet from both experienced boxers started off the second round with the momentum clearly with the Colombian boxer. Mary however clawed her way back into the bout, with three judges giving her the round.

Round 1: Valencia came darting out on the bell, looking to attack Mary and pick up some early points. Mary was more watchful in her approach in the opening round, which went Valencia's way.

While the Indian is a Bronze medallist from the 2012 London Games, Ingrit Valencia won the Rio 2016 Bronze. Mary has won against her on both occasions they have met, the latest being in 2019 AIBA World Championship quarter-finals.

Both are the first female boxers to win an Olympic medal for their respective countries.

Sailing: Nethra Kumanan finishes 20th in race eight of the women's one person dinghy - laser radial event. She is currently placed at 31st (out of 44) in the overall rankings.

Manu Bhaker finished 5th in the precision stage of 25m Pistol qualification round, while Rahi Sarnobat finished 25th. Their rapid stage round will take place tomorrow. Golfer Anirban Lahiri finished round one tied at sixth spot with a score of 4 under-par at 67.

Medals Tally

China is currently on top of the table, with 14 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze medals. USA is number two, with 13 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals. Japan is third, with 13 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals.

India is 46th, thanks to Mirabai Chanu's silver medal on Day One.

Australia Athletes Isolating After US Pole Vaulter Tests Positive

Members of the Australia's track and field team are currently isolating themselves as a precautionary measure after US pole vaulter Sam Kendricks tested positive earlier on Thursday, AFP reports. The athletics competition at the Tokyo games will begin on Friday.

"Members of Australia's track and field team at the Tokyo Olympic Games are isolating in their rooms as a precautionary measure following news of a Covid-positive finding with a member of the US track and field team," Athletics Australia said in statement. "They are now undergoing testing procedures in line with Australian Olympic team protocols."

While the statement does not state how many athletes are involved, the Sydney Morning Herald reports the entire 63-strong track and field team has been told to isolate.

China Smash World Record in Women's 4x200m Freestyle Swimming Relay

China's swimmers have smashed the world record in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay to win gold. The team of Yang Junxuan, Zhang Yufei, Li Bingjie and Tang Muhan finished in 7mins 40.33, just seconds ahead of the United States (7:40.73) and Australia (7:41.29). The previous world record of 7:41.50 was set by Australia at the 2019 world championships.

US Pole Vaulter Test Positive For Covid-19

US pole vaulter Sam Kendricks has tested positive for Covid-19 and will not be competing in Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee tweeted earlier on Thursday.

"The health and safety of our athletes, coaches and staff is our top priority. We are saddened to confirm that Sam Kendricks tested positive for COVID-19 and will not compete in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. In alignment with local rules and protocols, he has been transferred to a hotel to be placed in isolation and is being supported by the USATF and USOPC staff," the body tweeted.

"Sam is an incredible and accomplished member of Team USA and his presence will be missed. Out of respect for his privacy, we cannot provide more information at this time," the USOPC’s news feed added in the tweet.

Golf: Play has been interrupted due to lightning in the area. Anirban Lahiri finished round one tied at sixth spot with a score of 4 under-par at 67. Udayan Mane is currently at tied 30th spot after 10 holes, being one under par.

Sailing: Vishnu Saravanan finishes race eight of the men's one person dinghy-laser event at 23rd position. He has an overall ranking of 23 after seven races.

India's Ganapathy Kelapanda and Varun Thakkar finish 7th in race six of the men's skiff 49er event. Have an overall ranking of 17 (out of 19) after six races.

Nethra Kumanan finishes 22nd in race seven of the women's one person dinghy - laser radial event. She is currently ranked 33rd out of 44.

Golf: Shifting focus to golf for a bit where the Indian PGA Tour player AnIrban Lahiri Is looking set to be in contention over the next few days as he’s currently tied at the sixth spot with a score of -4 after 17 holes. Lahiri didn’t have the best of starts, bogeying his opening hole but he followed it up wIth four birdies on the front nine.

His second, and only other, bogey of the round came on the 12th hole following which he shot two more birdies, on the 15th and 16th to stand at -4 with just the 18th to go.

Meanwhile, Udayan Mane is one under par after 10 holes, sitting at 30th position.

Sailing: Vishnu Saravanan finished race seven of the men's one person dinghy-laser event at 26th position. He has an overall ranking of 22 after seven races.

Boxing: Brown would be needing a different strategy to beat Kumar. Kumar is easily able to duck his shots. Moving swiftly. Gets in a good hard right-hand jab. Brown gets three body shots in a row. Four of the five judges award round two to Kumar.

Men's Hockey Team Aiming to Repeat Performance Against Argentina

Indian men's hockey team will be looking to repeat their performance from Tuesday when they take on Argentina in their fourth match today. The Indian team is currently placed second, behind Australia, in the points table, with two wins and one loss. After the 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Australia, the Indian team came back strongly to beat Spain 3-1 on Tuesday and should enter the field full of confidence. To India's benefit, fourth-placed Argentina is not in the best of touch, having won, drawn and lost a game each.

Shuttler PV Sindhu, ranked seventh, will face Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt, ranked 12th, in the women's singles round of 16 matches. Sindhu beat Hong Kong's NY Cheung on Wednesday 2-0, but was challenged a bit in the second game. She would be hoping for a better show against Blichfeldt, a much stronger opponent.

Shooter Manu Bhaker will be looking to forget her gun malfunction incident during the 10m air pistol qualification earlier this week and rest her focus on the 25m pistol Women's Qualification Precision event, in which Rahi Sarnobat will also participate.

Later in the morning, archer Atanu Das will be seen in action in the men's individual 1/32 elimination round. Pugilist Satish Kumar will take on Ricardo Brown of Jamaica in the men's super heavy round of 16 match, while the legendary MC Mary Kom will be in action in the afternoon against Colombia's Ingrit Valencia in their round-of-16 clash.
