David Lynch reveals he hasn't quit filmmaking: 'Nobody knows what the future holds'

David Lynch has claimed that his previous remarks suggesting he had quit filmmaking “have been misrepresented.”

The Twin Peaks director, who received an emotional standing ovation at Cannes following the screening of season three's premiere episodes, told the Belgian newspaper Le Soir: “I did not say I quit cinema. Simply that nobody knows what the future holds.”

Lynch's previous credits include Blue Velvet, Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive. He made his previous comments to The Sydney Morning Herald, stating: “Things changed a lot. So many films were not doing well at the box office even though they might have been great films and the things that were doing well at the box office weren’t the things that I would want to do.”

When pushed to say whether his most recent big-screen feature - 2006's Inland Empire - was his final film, Lynch replied simply: “Yes it is.”
