Moment Darwin Nunez saw red: James Milner intervened three times while Jurgen Klopp left exasperated

How Darwin Nunez's moment of madness unfolded
How Darwin Nunez's moment of madness unfolded

Darwin Nunez was red carded for the blatant headbutt of Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen in Liverpool's 1-1 Premier League draw at Anfield.

The Uruguay international, who arrived in the summer for a potential club-record £85 million fee, was dismissed early in the second half for flooring the Eagles centre-back after the two had tangled with each other all night.

Nunez received his marching orders in the 57th minute, but the battle between the pair began long before the second-half flashpoint.

The video below shows how Andersen not only identified that he was able to get under the skin of the Liverpool forward, but also how he then did everything possible to niggle away at him and push the Uruguayan over the edge.

After nearly an hour of grabbing, pushing, jostling and barging, eventually Andersen got his man...

Nunez and Andersen battle for position

As Darwin Nunez and Joachim Andersen jockey for position in the Crystal Palace penalty area, the Liverpool striker appears to catch his marker with a backwards move of the head.

Nunez appeals for a penalty

When Liverpool's attacking move comes to an end, Nunez stands shouting at referee Paul Tierney, claiming he should have been awarded a penalty for being jostled, gesturing towards Andersen.

Andersen pushes Nunez

Andersen, angered by the apparent attempted head butt and appeals for a penalty, approaches Nunez from behind and gives him a strong push with an open palm.

Nunez sees red

Nunez reacts immediately, swiveling around and butting the defender in the head in clear view of Tierney. Andersen collapses to the ground after contact is made and a red card is swiftly brandished.

Nunez confronts referee

Despite the clean obvious nature of the red card, Nunez protests with the referee vehemently and is pulled away from the official by Liverpool captain James Milner.

Milner intervenes

It seems as if Milner has defused the volatile situation, but then Nunez attempts to make his way back towards Tierney. Milner once again directs the striker away from the official, pushing him in the direction of the tunnel.

Nunez reacts to Palace provocation

As it seems Nunez has accepted his fate, a piece of gum appears to have been launched at Nunez's back. He turns around angrily and confronts the Palace players around him with Jeffrey Schlupp the nearest to him.

Milner forces Nunez towards tunnel

Milner, for a third time, intercepts Nunez, forcing his way between the Uruguayan and Schlupp and pushing him towards the tunnel once again.

Klopp has had enough

Jurgen Klopp can then be seen shouting at Nunez to leave the pitch, the Liverpool manager clearly exasperated at the red card and ban to add to his lengthy list of absentees.

Frosty pitch exit

Nunez eventually does leave the Anfield pitch, heading straight down the tunnel without any acknowledgement from Klopp.
