Darth Vader VR Movie Being Penned By David Goyer

Legendary ‘Star Wars’ villain Darth Vader is getting his own movie…

At least, his own virtual reality movie. And it’s being penned by David Goyer.

Announced during Star Wars Celebration Europe, the upcoming Darth Vader VR movie is being produced by ILMxLabs – much like the recently unveiled (and completely awesome) ‘Trials on Tatooine’ experience.

“You are the visitor in this story that is happening in and around you, and to a certain extent you might even have some effect on,” said David S. Goyer. “You can pick up things, you can open things. You can push things, you can walk. You can touch characters.”

After experiencing ‘Trials on Tatooine’ for myself, I’m very excited by the prospect of a Darth Vader VR experience. After all, the recently unveiled demo (which lasts around 5 minutes) allows you to interact with the ‘Star Wars’ universe in ways you only imagined.

Using special VR gear, you can look around the Tatooine landscape as R2-D2 rolls on by… and when Stormtroopers inevitably attack, it’s up to you to fight back. Armed with a special VR lightsabre, it’s the Jedi experience of your dreams.

Now imagine what it might be like to take the fight to Darth Vader.

“The difference between cinema and television and VR – particularly with the fidelity that [the ILMxLab] team is working on, is that you really feel like you there,” Goyer added. “The sense of presence isn’t just a buzzword, and it’s surprisingly very emotional. It can make you sad, and make you lean in, and make you feel for a character in a way you haven’t before. In a way that you can’t really do in any other medium. And it can scare you.”

But when will this marriage of technology and cinema be released?

“I’m really, really excited for a year or two, whenever it happens, and you guys get to experience what we’re working on,” he explained. “It’s pretty mindblowing.”

Of course, VR is taking off in a rather explosive way… and with the cost and availability of headsets and equipment improving day by day, it might not be long before you can visit the iconic Darth Vader in the comfort of your own home.

Just don’t ask about his family…
