British interest in singles ended in meek fashion with a straight-sets defeat for Dan Evans against ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime. Evans had won their only previous meeting on the same courts 12 months ago to claim his only ATP Tour title but a repeat never looked on the cards here from the moment he dumped a forehand volley into the net to lose the opening set. Auger-Aliassime had spent eight hours on court in his first two rounds but Evans was unable to make this an extended stay on John Cain Arena, going down 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 in just an hour and 53 minutes.
World number two Daniil Medvedev swept aside Dutch Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open and stay on track for a second successive Grand Slam title. Van de Zandschulp, ranked 57th in the world, was the only player to take a set off the Russian when the pair met in their previous meeting at last year’s US Open, which Medvedev went on to win for his first major title.

Stefanos Tsitsipas staved off the incendiary Benoit Paire to reach the Australian Open fourth round on Saturday with a tough 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win but appeared not to realise the game was over after converting match point.
Paire dunked a forehand into the net on the first of three match points when serving to stay in the match, but fourth seed Tsitsipas walked to the back of the court rather than approach the net. The Greek turned around at the baseline with a look of surprise on his face, before walking forward to acknowledge Paire.

Evans put up a good fight in the first set and created some chances to get a real foothold in this match, but the frustrating thing was that he couldn’t take them, and his opponent did so, clinically. The second and third sets were different though and the match quickly got away from the 31-year-old Briton.
Reaching the fourth round in 2017 remains his best finish at the Australian Open, and it just wasn’t to be here up against and impressive 21-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has all the hallmarks of a future champion. With Novak Djokovic absent it’s wide open: might this be his year?

Dan Evans carries British hopes into the third round of the Australian Open as he bids to match his best run at a grand slam.
The 24th seed had an unexpected day off on Thursday after opponent Arthur Rinderknech withdrew, and then watched all his compatriots fall around him.
Now Evans will take on ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime with a place in the last-16 at stake.
Auger-Aliassime has had a fine start to the season, leading Canada to the ATP Cup title, but has spent eight hours on court so far in Melbourne in gruelling victories over Emil Ruusuvuori and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina while Evans defeated David Goffin in round one inside two hours.
Their only previous meeting came at Melbourne Park 12 months ago, when Evans defeated Auger-Aliassime to win his first ATP Tour title.
The Canadian, 21, was very good very young but his progress had stalled a little before he hooked up with Rafael Nadal’s uncle and former coach Toni last spring.
Appearances in the Wimbledon quarter-finals and US Open semi-finals followed and Auger-Aliassime told ausopen.com: “Him being there is a huge source of motivation and more than anything it’s confidence and trust.
