Dak Prescott close to Dallas Cowboys return? Getting stitches out before Giants game

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to get the stitches removed from his surgically-repaired right thumb before Monday night’s game against the New York Giants.

It will the second straight game missed by Prescott since fracturing his thumb in the 19-3 season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Cooper Rush led the Cowboys to a 20-17 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 2 and hopes to do the same against the Giants.

How long he remains the starter in Prescott’s absence remains unknown.

But getting the stitches out is a major step forward in a return for Prescott.

The Cowboys have intimated that Prescott could return as soon as the Oct. 2 game against the Washington Commanders or possibly Oct. 8 at the Los Angeles Rams.

The more viable target date is Oct. 16 at the Philadelphia Eagles, which would be a little more than four weeks from the date of surgery on Sept. 12.

It takes fractured bones at least four weeks to heal.

The good news is that there is not a lot of swelling in his hand around the fracture. It’s a matter of him gripping the ball and being able to throw.

One reason the Cowboys kept Prescott on the active roster and didn’t put him on injured reserve is so he can return to practice and soon as he’s able, hastening the ramp up to a return, whether it’s Oct. 9 or Oct. 16.

It certainly won’t be next Sunday against Washington on a short week after a Monday night game.

The Cowboys are just hoping they can continue winning under Rush until Prescott is ready to go.
