Crowd Flees New York's Washington Square Park After Fireworks Mistaken for Gunshots

People were seen running out of New York’s Washington Square Park after fireworks were set off during Pride celebrations on Sunday evening, June 26.

Police determined no shots were fired and the noises that caused panic were from fireworks being set off, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey said.

Video posted by Michael Gogel showed people running down the street near the park.

“It happened so fast. Maybe 8-20 minutes of panic all in,” he said.

“It was extremely scary even from where I was. I hid behind the balcony … not knowing which direction to look,” he added. Credit: Michael Gogel via Storyful
