Critics Choice Awards best moments: 'Minari' kid's cute tears, Jason Sudeikis thanks Olivia Wilde

The 26th annual Critics Choice Awards ventured forth virtually in the pandemic-hampered 2021 awards season, one week after the Golden Globes brought almost every type of technical problem.

Impressively, Sunday's Critics Choice show on CW, with third-time host Taye Diggs, saw surprisingly fewer technical difficulties than the Globes did, even with winners Zooming in their acceptance speeches from around the world.

"Judas and the Black Messiah" star Daniel Kaluuya, for instance, who found himself on mute after winning best supporting actor at the Globes, gave a speech without technical incident when he won again at Critics Choice.

Still, it was "a very unusual show in a very weird year," as Diggs said.

These were the most memorable moments at the Critics Choice Awards:

Alan Kim, the 8-year-old who has earned raves as the stoic David in "Minari," was so overcome when he won best young actor that he shed happy tears during his acceptance speech.

"Oh, my goodness, I'm crying," he said weepily but joyfully, before working through a list of industry thank-yous that included his agent and production company Plan B. "And I look forward to being in another movie soon."

"Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis, who memorably wore a tie-dye hoodie and spoke so long at the Golden Globes that fellow nominee Don Cheadle had to wrap him up, was back on the virtual awards podium. Accepting best comedy actor and comedy series, Sudeikis wore (surprise!) a new hoodie and again ran long.

"Where do I start? More importantly, where do I end?" he mused. Amid the torrent of words, Sudeikis managed to work in a thank-you to his ex Olivia Wilde, who sparked the idea of making "Ted Lasso" the Apple TV+ hit it has become.

"I want to thank my kids, Otis and Daisy. I want to thank their mom, Olivia, who had the initial idea to do this as a TV show," Sudeikis said.

Taylor Simone Ledward, who choked up last week when her late husband won best actor for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" at the Globes, returned to accept Chadwick Boseman's Critics Choice award.

Once again, Simone was moved to tears imagining what her husband, who died last August of colon cancer, would have said in his acceptance speech for his role in the August Wilson adaptation.

"He would talk about the importance of Black voices, telling Black stories," she said, adding that the "Black Panther" star's work will continue to be revered in the years ahead.

"I know that the seeds you planted will grow into forests," she concluded.

"Nomadland" writer and director Chloe Zhao had a huge night as the first Chinese woman to win best director and adapted screenplay (two of four awards the drama won that included best picture, the most awards of any film).

But Zhao went from thankful to touching and somber when she dedicated her speech to Michael Wolf Snyder, 35, the film's production sound mixer who died last week.

"He just passed away," said Zhao, who teared up as she poignantly remembered Wolf for his ability to share Zen serenity with crew members during the often-difficult shoot.

"Thank you, Wolf, we honor you," said Zhao. "We’ll see you down the road, my friend."

Seth Meyers, who won for best talk show for "Late Night With Seth Meyers," showed the best things about these hybrid award shows are the family photobombs. He proved that when he introduced his recently vaccinated parents, Lawrence and Hilary Meyers, who were visiting. The two could be heard giggling off-camera before making a quick video-bomb appearance.

They gave a repeat performance backstage and Meyers joked the duo were gunning for their own Peacock streaming series. "My parents, as usual, are driving an incredibly hard bargain on the contract," he cracked.

Michelle Buteau, whose "Welcome to Buteaupia" shared best comedy special honors with Jerry Seinfeld's "23 Hours to Kill," revealed a living room of cheering couch supporters before showing off the casual attire beneath her gown: "I've got jogging pants on!"
