Crazy Rich Asians' Henry Golding in first look at GI Joe spin-off Snake Eyes

A first proper look at Henry Golding in GI Joe spin-off Snake Eyes has been unleashed.

The Crazy Rich Asians star takes on the titular role in the new movie, which is set to delve into who the silent character is and where he came from.

In the newly released pictures posted to Instagram, we see Golding show off a pretty cool-looking handstand fight move while also facing off against an unseen individual and gazing mesmerised at a samurai sword.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura promised that the movie will "answer some questions", teasing: "You'll learn who he is, where he came from."

As made clear, we'll see Snake Eyes out of the iconic helmet, with Golding explaining: "I wanted to see something different, and I wanted it to look different, to feel different.

"To be able to launch a franchise like that, it was just too good to be true — and especially with a character like Snake Eyes about whom a lot of people don't know too much.

"They know him as this insane operator that completes missions and is an absolute weapon, but who's the guy behind the mask and what's his story?"

Speaking last year about Snake Eyes, Golding promised that the spin-off would be authentic, explaining to EW: "[Director] Robert [Schwentke] is a huge Japanese cinephile, everything from [Akira] Kurosawa to just the phenomenal Spaghetti Westerns of samurai movies.

"He is so hooked into that history and we see some of those scenes. With some of the fight scenes, there are some chimbara sequences. A lot of attention to cultural detail was put into this movie.

"There are not a lot of movies that are allowed to film in Japan and we went to some amazing, amazing places. The authenticity is there."

Snake Eyes is due for release on July 23 in the US and August 20 in the UK.
