The number of coronavirus cases recorded around the world has passed 100 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, after the UK’s official death toll from Covid-19 passed 100,000 on Tuesday afternoon.

Boris Johnson said it was “hard to compute the sorrow contained in that grim statistic” as the UK joined Mexico, India, Brazil and the USA as the only nations to have six-figure death tolls as a result of the virus, which has claimed the lives of more than 2.1 million people worldwide.

Mr Johnson told a Downing Street press conference: "I think on this day I should just really repeat that I am deeply sorry for every life that has been lost and of course as I was Prime Minister I take full responsibility for everything that the government has done.

Meanwhile, the prime minister is expected to approve plans to force some travellers arriving to the UK to quarantine in hotels to limit the spread of new coronavirus variants.

It comes after health secretary Matt Hancock warned the NHS is “stretched to the limit” as the number of coronavirus patients in intensive care and on ventilation has reached the highest level of the pandemic so far.
