From 'covfefe' to 'council,' Trump's trouble with spelling is 'unpresidented'

The commander-in-tweet could use a proofreader.

President Trump, who frequently boasts about his intelligence, has just as frequently stumbled in spelling errors in his tweets — even about sensitive topics, such as special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of interference in the 2016 election.

On Wednesday, for example, Trump used Twitter to relay a statement from Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz about Mueller. The president’s tweet had four errors and a typo.

“‘Special Council [sic] is told to find crimes, wether [sic] crimes exist or not. I was opposed the the [sic] selection of Mueller to be Special Council [sic], I still am opposed to it. I think President Trump was right when he said there never should have been a Special Council [sic] appointed,” Trump tweeted.

The president deleted the tweet and reposted it — correcting the misspelled “whether” and double “the,” but leaving the multiple misspellings of “Council” intact.

It’s not the first time Trump has made that mistake. Last May, after Trump tweeted about the “White House Council,” editors at the Merriam-Webster dictionary mocked the president on Twitter.

Trump also previously deleted and reissued a corrected tweet about the “special councel.”

‘Unpresidented’

A month after his election, Trump tweeted, “China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters – rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented [sic] act.” He corrected the tweet, but not before it caught the attention of Merriam-Webster.

‘Tapp’

In May 2017, Trump accused former President Barack Obama of wiretapping his phones at Trump Tower. He did not offer evidence to back up his claim, but he did offer an extra “p” in his spelling of “tap.”

‘Heel’

In August 2017, Trump expressed on Twitter hope that the country would come together after decades of divisiveness — and finally “heel.”

‘Consensual presidency’

In January, Trump again appeared to flub a tweet relaying a quote, this one from a New York Post article.

“His is turning out to be an enormously consensual presidency,” Trump tweeted, quoting an op-ed column by Michael Goodwin.

But Goodwin didn’t call Trump’s presidency consensual. He called it “consequential.”

‘Covfefe’

Trump’s most famous misspelling came during a tweet published just after midnight on May 31, 2017, that appeared to end abruptly.

“Despite the constant negative press covfefe,” Trump wrote.

Six hours later, Trump did something unusual: He poked fun at himself.

Trump is not known to be a voracious reader, preferring to receive his intelligence briefings orally, rather than written, and spend his so-called executive time watching cable news.

‘Leightweight chocker’

And Trump’s spelling woes pre-date his presidency. During the 2016 campaign, Trump mocked his primary opponents, Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Marco Rubio, with misspelled missives.

“Lying Ted Cruz and leightweight chocker Marco Rubio teamed up last night in a last ditch effort to stop our great movement. They failed!” Trump tweeted on Feb. 26, 2016.

“Leightweight chocker Marco Rubio looks like a little boy on stage. Not presidential material!” he tweeted the same day.

Both tweets were deleted. This one, however, was not.
