Courteney Cox Reveals What Happened During Jennifer Aniston's Birthday In-Flight Emergency

Courteney Cox is opening up about the terrifying emergency landing Jennifer Aniston’s private plane was forced to make while the two were en route to Mexico.

Cox, 54, was with Aniston heading to Cabo San Lucas when the private plane they were on experienced problems with the landing gear. The friends were celebrating Aniston’s 50th birthday with a girl’s trip.

“I’m not afraid of flying at all, my dad was a pilot, but I was really scared because when we were taking off, we heard this really loud bang,” Cox told Extra. “I was like, ‘Oh, that sounds like we should probably check that tire.’”

She continued, “There was no tire at all, there was no wheel. Luckily, there are two wheels on each side and two in the front.”

“I have to say, we were in the air for four hours, burning off fuel and just thought of what it is going to be like when we land,” Cox explained. “It was a really smooth landing.”

The mother of one added she texted her 14-year-old daughter Coco and boyfriend Johnny McDaid.

“I sent a little text to Coco, ‘I love you,’” Cox said. “I didn’t say why, and to Johnny. I told him everything that was going on and I FaceTimed him after.”

Speaking about the emergency landing, a source previously told PEOPLE that the actress was headed to Mexico when her plane circled back and landed at the Ontario International Airport in Ontario, California.

The airport was closed down so the plane could land, according to the source, who added that the actress and her friends would wait for a new plane at the airport before continuing on their trip.

As for how what she gave her best friend and former Friends costar, Cox said, “A bunch of us got her a pottery wheel and lessons, even though she’s a great artist, and a table — a big, beautiful antique table.”

Last week, the Ontario International Airport wrote in an initial tweet about the emergency landing, “ALERT: ONT and the City of Ontario Police and Fire Departments are currently on alert for an incoming aircraft. More information to follow.”
