Couple on anniversary beach trip have more to celebrate after $100,000 NC lottery win
A couple got an unexpected bonus gift for their second wedding anniversary when they headed to the beaches of Calabash, North Carolina, to celebrate.
Kenneth Smith, a 33-year-old real estate worker from Greensboro, told lottery officials he stopped by the Calabash Food and Fuel on Beach Drive Southwest to buy a lottery ticket on a friend’s recommendation.
“We wouldn’t have known about it if it hadn’t been for him,” said Smith.
Smith and his wife soon found out they landed the $100,000 prize from their $100 Million Mega Cash scratch-off.
Smith said he took out his family and friends, who were with them on the trip, to breakfast to celebrate.
“I’ve always fantasized about winning a big prize in the lottery,” he said.
He took home just over $71,000 after tax withholdings on Friday, Aug. 5, at the Raleigh lottery headquarters.
Smith said he plans to use the cash for home improvements and to build a fence for the couple’s new dachshund puppy, Stella.
Calabash is about 50 miles southwest of Wilmington.
