Could The Good Dinosaur Be Bigger Than Inside Out?

There’s no denying that ‘Inside Out’ has been a huge success and return to form for Disney Pixar.

Having amassed $832 million and received rave reviews across the critical board, it’s left some speculating over Pixar’s second film of 2015, ‘The Good Dinosaur’, with some convinced it’ll be overshadowed by the movie set inside a little girl’s mind.

But let’s not feel sorry for the dino-centric production just yet.

The most recent trailer is unquestionably gorgeous, though it tells us relatively little about the story or its characters. It appears Peter Sohn’s tale of when dinosaurs continued to rule the Earth after that meteor narrowly missed might not require any premature sympathy.

Will It Make More Money?

In fact, analysts have predicted it could perform better than Pete Docter’s ‘Inside Out’ when released this November.

According to the stats, dino chat around the movie over the past 30 days has generated a whopping 3.7 million engagements on digital platforms (including social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook). This figure is more than double the engagements ‘Inside Out’ had (1.5 million) in the same time period prior to its summer release.

Twitter and YouTube have been ‘The Good Dinosaur’s’ big strengths, with social media buzz and YouTube views up 306% and 230% respectively, against ‘Inside Out’.

Cashing-In On The Dino Craze

One reason for ‘The Good Dinosaur’s’ enormous popularity could be on the back of the success of ‘Jurassic World’, whereby the two are easily liked through conversation.

However, aside from any vague, albeit positive comments from those lucky enough to have glimpsed the finished film already, it’s still uncertain a) how it’ll be received both critically and by the public, and b) how it’ll subsequently perform at the box office.

There are, however, some fairly certainly assumptions. Regardless of how reviews turn out, it’ll no doubt match the consistent standards of a Pixar movie release and make at least half a billion dollars (or thereabouts) without breaking a sweat. Factor in the public’s thirst current for dinosaurs and its Thanksgiving and Christmas cinema release, it is certainly in good stead.

Whether it’ll surpass ‘Inside Out’s’ haul is still in question, but the popularity of its subject matter and the hugely positive reception ‘Jurassic World’ had is real reason for optimism.

Will It Be Better A Better Film Than Inside Out?

But onto the burning (and mostly subjective) question: will ‘The Good Dinosaur’ actually be better than ‘Inside Out’? Speaking as a huge Pixar fan, it seems unlikely it’ll generate the same emotional engagement but will perhaps be more accessible to a wider (and younger) audience. ‘Inside Out’ might’ve lost younger viewers with its exploration of inner emotion, approach to puberty, and adult subtext, whereas ‘The Good Dinosaur’ should cater a little better for all ages.

There’s certainly no reason why ‘The Good Dinosaur’ can’t be a massive success (especially with its ideal release dates both in the States and in other territories). Yet it’s perhaps naive to base a prognosis purely on what’s happening currently on social media. Trends, as we know, come and go, so it’s often hard to determine audience preference at various times in the future.

Still, it’s a good sign that it looks like they have another hit on their hands, so expect a Pixar-filled Oscars early next year in both Best Animation and Best Animated Short Film categories. Could we even see one of them compete in the Best Picture shortlist?

‘The Good Dinosaur’ is in UK cinemas from 27 November.
