Rebel forces 'reach Damascus suburbs' as protesters topple statue on outskirts
Syrian rebels have reportedly taken the key city of Homs and reached the suburbs of the capital Damascus as their lightning offensive threatens to end Bashar al Assad's 24-year rule. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said insurgents are now active in three Damascus suburbs, including Maadamiyah, Jaramana and Daraya - making it the first time they have reached the outskirts of the city since 2018, when government forces recaptured the area after a years-long siege. Meanwhile, Syrian rebel commander Hassan Abdul-Ghani said insurgent forces had now "fully liberated" Syria's central city of Homs - in a strategically important move the cuts off Damascus from coastal military bases.

Bells ring through Paris as Notre Dame re-opens its doors
STORY: :: Notre Dame's famous bells ring once again in an opening ceremony attended by world leaders:: Paris, France:: December 7, 2024:: Emmanuel Macron, President of France"Tonight, the bells of Notre-Dame ring again and the organ will awaken in a moment. Music of hope, familiar to Parisians, to France and to the world. The bells of Notre-Dame ring again, they who have marked the hours of the day, and those of history."Paris archbishop Laurent Ulrich, whose seat is at the Notre Dame, called upon ‘Our Lady’ to open the doors of the newly restored church, and knocked three times with a staff.Notre-Dame has been meticulously restored, with a new spire and rib vaulting, its flying buttresses and carved stone gargoyles returned to their past glory and white stone and gold decorations shining brightly once again. On the evening of April 15, 2019, dismayed Parisians rushed to the scene and TV viewers worldwide watched horrified as the fire raged through the cathedral.Thousands of experts - from carpenters and stonemasons to stained glass window artists - worked around the clock for the last five years, using age-old methods to restore, repair or replace everything that was destroyed or damaged.World dignitaries attended the re-opening ceremony, including U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, Britain's Prince William, U.S. First Lady Jill Biden, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Elon Musk and donors of the restoration.
