Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street has shared more details on Evelyn and Cassie Plummer's puppy farm storyline.
The soap started a new issue-based story in Wednesday's (December 6) episode when Evelyn confronted a man, Terry, for mistreating his dog.
This strand will continue in Friday's (December 8) instalment when Evelyn spots the man again and decides she must get involved to protect the dog. Watch a behind-the-scenes clip below:
In the coming weeks, Evelyn and daughter Cassie will learn that Terry has an illegal dog-breeding business that he runs out of his home.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has been working closely with the Coronation Street team throughout this story to ensure the well-being of the dogs on set and offer guidance on accuracy.
Animal welfare expert Herchy Boal has been on the set of the ITV1 soap throughout the filming of these scenes to look after the dogs being used.
"It's all the more vital to raise awareness of this ahead of Christmas — when many people might be considering adding a pet to the family," Boal said.
“The team at Coronation Street were fantastic — showing great patience, listening to our advice and always putting the welfare of the puppies first — even pausing filming for long periods whenever the pups needed a nap!"
Coronation Street producer Iain MacLeod has called this plot "hugely important", saying the soap was dedicated to depicting the issue accurately and ensuring the safety of all dogs on set.
"It is a really important story to tell, but it was also vital to make sure it was fun for the actors’ canine co-stars — and as all our behind-the-scenes footage shows, it certainly was," the producer said.
Before Wednesday's episode aired, Coronation Street star Dame Maureen Lipman offered some insight on why Evelyn feels compelled to stop Terry.
"Clearly the dog is frightened," Lipman said. "[Evelyn] is never one to stand by and let someone get away with something she perceives as injustice, and of course, she is a dog lover, so she is determined to rescue the dog."
Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
