Coronavirus: Consumer spending on sporting equipment reaches new heights

Online consumer spending on sporting equipment reached its highest growth level this year, as Brits finally have sports to look forward to later this summer.

Research by ecommerce expert Emarsys found consumer spending on sporting equipment shot up a massive 94% year on year in the week leading up the end of May — the highest growth level in 2020 so far.

This likely reflects the fact that Premier League football is set to restart on 17 June, test cricket will resume on 8 July, and Premiership rugby is set to start 15 August, the experts said.

Among the best-selling products in the last week are boxing gloves (up 7,019% year on year), footballs (up 3,215% year on year), trainers (up 2,280%) and sports bras (1,083%).

Alex Timlin, senior vice president of verticals at Emarsys, said: “After having endured a tough lockdown, the British public are obviously looking forward to sport later this summer to lift spirits.

“This is reflected in the sales of sporting equipment we’ve seen at Emarsys over the past few weeks, which has grown dramatically. We anticipate that when physical shops reopen from 15 June, we’ll see an even bigger spike in the overall demand for sporting products.”

Newcastle’s Betway Welcome Back British Racing Handicap horse race marked the return of professional sports at the end of May. It received the government go-ahead with less than 48 hours to go.

Culture secretary Oliver Dowden described it as “a significant moment for British sport”.

Premier League football will be next to return, in England but not Scotland. Formula One, golf, tennis and cricket will follow.

Prime minister Boris Johnson called it a "much-needed boost to national morale".
