The State Department had designated him late last year as "wrongfully detained" by Russia, committing Washington to try to negotiate his release. At least 10 other Americans remain behind bars in Russia.

Trump Welcomes US Teacher Marc Fogel to the White House After Russian Prison Release
American schoolteacher Marc Fogel was welcomed home by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, February 11, after being held in Russia for three-and-a-half years.Footage released by Special Assistant to the President and Communications Advisor Margo Martin shows Trump greeting Fogel outside the White House before the pair address a small crowd in the Diplomatic Reception Room.“Thank you all, I love our country I’m so happy to be back here” Fogel said with an American flag draped around his neck. “I wish I could articulate it better.”According to local news reports, Fogel was detained at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in August 2021 for drug smuggling after he was found with 17 grams of marijuana in his luggage.The marijuana had been medically prescribed to treat chronic pain from a spinal condition.A White House media release on Tuesday announced Fogel had left Russian airspace.“President Trump, (Special Envoy) Steve Witkoff and the President’s advisors negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine,” it said.
