Congress recruiting over 500,000 'social media warriors'

The Indian National Congress is recruiting an army of over 500,000 ‘social media warriors’ to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party in the online space.

This army of social media warriors will take on the BJP's ‘IT cell’, the report added. The Congress will soon announce a helpline number and dedicated social media pages to attract those who would like to join its IT cell.

Online wars between political parties in India are now likely to intensify further.

The Congress, after two straight Lok Sabha electoral debacles, seems to have realised the power of social media in influencing people and even swaying public opinion.

With this in mind, the party hiring over 5 lakh social media warriors who will take the Congress message/propaganda to all parts of India.

The party is enlisting 50,000 office bearers spread across every district in the country: these ‘office bearers’ will be assisted in their messaging by more than 450,000 ‘volunteers’.

A helpline number was launched on Monday, with dedicated web pages, on social media platforms to attract people and create a data bank of youth interested in joining the Congress’s IT cell.

The party will screen, scrutinise and sift through the applications it gets from interested people, and then conduct interviews to hire the right kind of people. Once recruited, these ‘social media warriors’ will undergo training on what to do and how to do it.

The Congress says that these recruits will help counter the BJP’s propaganda.

It remains to be seen if the Congress can turn its fortunes around by just having an army of social media warriors spreading its message: for the country has for quite a while now felt the need for a responsible and able Opposition.

One thing, though, is certain: the online space is set to get a whole lot murkier as all sorts of propaganda and unsubstantiated will soon hit the common man from all sides and parties on social media platforms, on phone messengers, emails, and more.
