Yesterday Sam Smith all but revealed he is singing the new Bond movie theme, by tweeting a picture of a very smart Spectre ring.

And now it’s all confirmed – he’s recorded the track ‘Writing’s On The Wall’ for the movie, putting him in the hallowed company of the likes of Shirley Bassey, Carly Simon and Duran Duran.

It’s the first Bond theme recorded by a British male solo artist since 1965, and has been written by Jimmy Napes, who’s penned several of Smith’s hits, as well as tracks for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Gorgon City and Disclosure.

Said Sam: “This is one of the highlights of my career. I am honoured to finally announce that I will be singing the next Bond theme song.

“I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line up of some of my biggest musical inspirations. I hope you all enjoy the song as much as I enjoyed making it.”

Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, added: “Sam and Jimmy have written the most inspirational song for 'Spectre’ and with Sam’s extraordinary vocal performance, 'Writing’s On The Wall’ will surely be considered one of the greatest Bond songs of all time.”

Smith’s theme will have much to live up to.

Last year Adele won an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Brit and a Grammy for her theme to 'Skyfall’.

'Writing’s On The Wall’ will be released on September 25, with 'Spectre’ following on October 26.
