Maluma picked the perfect venue to launch his Don Juan World Tour on Thursday night.
The Colombian star’s crown iconography and purple theme matched perfectly with with the identity of Golden 1 Center’s home team, the Sacramento Kings.
“Good evening, my people. For me, it is an honor to be back in Sacramento. It is a place where I have always felt at home, especially today when we are starting the tour,“ he said.
“Crazy because in 2021, we were also here, and it was also the first concert of the Papi Juancho tour... Today, we are still here, and in advance, I have to tell you that I love you with all my heart, and thank you very much.”
Maluma’s alter ego Don Juan was on full display. The new look is a play on his birth name, Juan Luis Londoño Arias, and supplants previous persona Papi Juancho. An “M” on stage was suited for runway modeling, and the artist’s status as a brand ambassador for the current Hugo Boss collection was clear in the dress of of the rapper and his dancers.
Tracks in his newly released album “Don Juan” introduced some new sounds for the eclectic Latin artist, including salsa and house, while his classics demonstrated his reggaeton roots.
Maluma, 29, is known for his many collaborations, including songs with Madonna, Ricky Martin and The Weeknd. Argentinian soccer legend Lionel Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami of the MLS, stars in his new music video.
His film roles include 2022’s “Marry Me,” where his character’s affair sends star Jennifer Lopez into the arms of Owen Wilson, and a supporting role the animated Disney film “Encanto.”
After shows in Portland and Seattle, Maluma will return to California to play the SAP Center in San Jose on Sept. 6 and the Forum in Inglewood on Sept. 9. The tour concludes at Kaseya Center in Miami in November.
