Coming off 2-loss weekend, playoff spot is on the line for Kansas City Comets this week

With the playoffs looming, the Kansas City Comets faced the most important weekend of their season ... and lost twice.

The Comets fell 6-5 at home Saturday and 7-4 on the road Sunday.

Saturday night’s loss at home against the Florida Tropics was the Comets’ second consecutive defeat at Cable Dahmer Arena.

The Comets were scoreless in the first half and trailed 5-1 after three quarters. They eventually clawed their way back before Leo Gibson’s 299th regular-season goal brought the Comets within one with 1:04 remaining. The potential equalizer was inches away from goal in the final seconds.

The Comets had no shortage of opportunities, outshooting the Tropics 58-14, but lacked efficiency in front of the goal.

“We were just missing the target and taking unnecessary shots,” Gibson said. “It’s one of those things when we outshoot teams and we lose because we were not taking good shots and we are not hitting the targets.”

It was a different story Sunday in the Comets’ quick-turnaround road trip to Baltimore to take on the Blast. A nightmare travel situation split up the team on different flights and the game was delayed more than an hour,

A portion of the team arrived at the arena during the first quarter and the Comets, down 3-0, rallied to tie it at 3 in the third quarter. But Baltimore took advantage of its fourth-quarter opportunities and prevailed 7-4.

Now clinging to the last MASL playoff spot — with the St. Louis Ambush hoping to jump ahead — the Comets will be home Sunday against the Harrisburg Heat. It’s the regular-season home finale for KC and a game the Comets cannot afford to lose.

“We all agree as a team that losing at home is unacceptable and not supposed to happen,” said Gibson, whose team has now lost two in a row at home. “Not when you’re playing at home and have your fan base with you.

“It’s disappointing to chase games when you’re at home. It’s exhausting; it’s something that our guys need to realize to avoid further frustration of losing at home.”

Following Sunday’s game with the Heat, the Comets will conclude their regular season in Harrisburg on April 2. A pair of new signings will be in the mix for KC: Denmark Futsal National Team star Mads Falck and defender DeBray Hollimon.
