Columbus, TERRA win at GMAC Bowling. Columbus also wins at GMAC golf. Belen golf wins, too

The Columbus boys’ team and TERRA girls’ team each remained undefeated by winning the GMAC Bowling Tournament at Bird Bowl in Westchester.

The tournament bracket is set up with a blind draw as each team is considered the top in its division; no seed is possible. Each match in the double elimination tournament is best-of-5 games with a Baker format.

There were 106 boys’ games. There were 94 girls’ games.

Unbeaten Columbus defeated Cutler Bay in the boys’ finals in three straight sets (189-150, 169-149, 204-157). The champs are Robbie Martinez, Chris Ferrer, Aidan Acevedo, Carlo Toca, George Kakouris, Luca Ordonez, Marlon Ruiz, Alejandro Johnson, Coach Adam Scholer.

Unbeaten TERRA beat Coral Reef in the girls’ finals also in three straight sets (130-102, 136-128, 150-100). The champs are Ella Perez, Alexa Puett, Gillian Pons, Alyssa Sosa, Jezel Lopez, Janessa Lopez, Coach Catherine Manfra.

The teams that qualified for GMAC:

Boys: Columbus, Cutler Bay, Hialeah Miami Lakes, Dr. Michael Krop, Miami High, Miami Palmetto, Ronald Reagan/Doral, Miami High.

Girls: American, Coral Reef, John A Ferguson, Hialeah High, Miami Killian, Dr. Michael Krop, Ronald Reagan/Doral, TERRA Environmental Research Institute.

Other highlights:

Ferguson girls had a difficult draw with Coral Reef as their first matchup. The Falcons won, and Coral Reef fell to the loser bracket. Then in the quarterfinal Ferguson faced TERRA, and TERRA won en route to the title.

The Coral Reef girls did an amazing job fighting throughout the day from the loser bracket, even upsetting Ferguson in the semifinal to avenge its earlier loss and reach the final.

In the boys’ division, the random pairings set up an outstanding tournament with three of the four brackets needing to play either four or five sets -- meaning only one pairing was lopsided with a three-set win.

The boys’ loser bracket pairings were tight again with all matches there taking four or five sets, including a tie and bowl-off.
