Britain will review its controls on outward investment and exports to protect its economic security, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's deputy said, warning of the global economy's vulnerabilities to actions of players like Russia and China. Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden said that globalisation had exposed the security risks of economic integration, citing the rise in the price of gas spurred by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and "Chinese acts of economic coercion." "Our open economy is being targeted by state-based actors and their proxies, across our inbound and outbound investment flows, our imports and exports and our academic collaborations," Dowden said in a speech at the Chatham House think tank in London.

This total cutie pie is a baby bat-eared fox who was born on 5 April 2024 at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. He is doing well in the care of the Zoo’s neonate specialists and animal care staff. The baby bat, known as a kit, is a little squeaker, according to staff at the zoo! “The kit, a boy, is progressing well with bottle feeding. He sleeps a lot, which is normal, and makes adorable vocalisations when it’s feeding time,”said Cincinnati Zoo’s Animal Ambassador Team head keeper Samantha Villa. “His eyes are already open, and he is curious about his surroundings,” adds Senior Trainer at the Cat Ambassador Program, Andie Haugen. In addition to meeting the kit’s nutritional needs, the team is spending time socialising him and making sure that he is comfortable with people. He will eventually become an ambassador animal, and visitors will see him in the zoo’s Cheetah Encounter and at some events. Bat-eared foxes have giant ears and exceptional hearing that helps them locate insects to eat. They also have more teeth than most mammals, making it easier to consume live prey and are native to southern Africa.
During a recent discussion in Pleasantville, New York, the Father of the Bride and Buffy the Vampire Slayer producer said she didn't understand the hype around the Euphoria star, adding, "She's not pretty, she can't act." A representative for the in-demand actress responded to Baum's "shameful" comments in a statement on Wednesday. "How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman," the rep said. "If that's what she's learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that's shameful.

Futures for Wall Street's main indexes gained on Thursday as chip stocks rebounded, while investors awaited commentary from Federal Reserve officials to ascertain the outlook for interest-rate cuts. Micron Technology rose 1.9% after a report that the memory-chip maker is set to get more than $6 billion in grants from the U.S. Commerce Department to help pay for domestic chip factory projects. "Generally, fundamentals will be supportive of chip stocks, but also after such a strong rally, it's not unusual to see a bit of profit-taking," said Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index.
U.S. banks have been grappling with increased funding costs as elevated interest rates prompt customers to move cash from banks to safe-haven higher-yielding alternatives like money-market funds for better returns. Net interest income (NII), or the difference between what a bank earns on loans and pays out on deposits, fell 20% to $886 million in the quarter. In recent weeks, analysts have pushed back expectations of interest rate cuts this year due to strong economic data.
