Cockroaches, flies and gnats: This week’s Triangle sanitation scores (June 28)

The News & Observer publishes a weekly round-up of restaurant sanitation scores to keep you up-to-date on the health grades at Triangle spots.

Sanitation scores and their corresponding letter grades are used in North Carolina to assess restaurants’ adherence to rules and standards intended to mitigate and prevent the spread of foodborne illnesses.

You’ve likely seen sanitation grade cards at restaurants you’ve visited, and The N&O previously explained what those scores mean and how they’re calculated.

Here are sanitation scores in Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties for the week of June 21-28.

Wake County sanitation scores

The Wake County sanitation grades database shows that 100 restaurants were inspected between June 21-28.

▪ All restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Durham County sanitation scores

The Durham County inspection management system shows that 16 restaurant inspections were completed between June 21-28.

▪ Most restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

▪ Two restaurants received B grades, or a score of at least 80% but lower than 90%.

Backyard BBQ Pit (5122 N.C. Hwy 55, Durham) received a score of 83% during an inspection on June 22.

• The restaurant was in violation of 18 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to three points.

• Violations included employees not properly washing their hands, multiple foods being stored at incorrect temperatures, the facility having “absolutely no refrigeration” working and “excessive amounts of flies and gnats” in the facility during the inspection.
  
  

• Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.

• The restaurant previously scored a 90% in September 2021, an 87% in August 2021 and a 94.5% in November 2020.

Pei Wei Express (6910 Fayetteville Rd., Space 230, Durham) received a score of 85% during an inspection on June 27.

• The restaurant was in violation of 19 state standards, with point deductions ranging from zero to two points.

• Violations included employees reusing single-use gloves, several foods being stored at incorrect temperatures, employees not wearing hair restraints and two live cockroaches being in the facility.

• Some violations were corrected during the inspection, the inspection report shows.

• The restaurant previously scored a 91% in January, a 97.5% in April 2021 and a 97.5% in December 2020.

▪ No restaurants in Durham County received a C grade, or a score of at least 70% but less than 80%.

▪ No restaurants received a failing grade, or a score below 70%.

Orange County sanitation scores

The Orange County inspection management system shows that 45 restaurants were inspected between June 21-28.

▪ All 45 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.

Johnston County sanitation scores

The Johnston County sanitation inspections database shows that 31 restaurants were inspected between June 21-28.

▪ All 31 restaurants received an A grade, or a score of at least 90%.
